FAQ

A Remedial Massage service is what we recommend if you are looking to relieve muscle tightness and soreness, whether it be from work, exercise, or stress.

A Myotherapy service is what we recommend if you have an injury or pain that is either acute or chronic, and would like treatment, guidance, and exercise prescription for your rehabilitation.

Myotherapy and Remedial Massage use similar techniques in their treatments. However, the approach in treatment is different depending if we are treating general muscle soreness and tension, or if we need a more focused assessment and approach to treat the issue.

To give an example of what is expected from each type of treatment:

  • a person seeking remedial massage should expect the majority of their session being hands-on using massage techniques to relieve their tension and soreness. This typically involves stretching, deep tissue massage and/or trigger point release techniques.
  • a person seeking myotherapy should expect their treatment to be more assessment-based to uncover the root cause of their pain and discomfort (from either an acute or chronic injury/pain), then followed with hands-on treatment using massage and/or other physical therapy techniques. The treatment will also include appropriate exercise prescription for long-term results.

This is how we at “Progressive Myotherapy” classifies these service types, which may differ in perspective and philosophies from other practitioners.

You should also expect the duration of the session to be carried out for the allocated time you have booked in for.

MYOTHERAPY

The duration of a myotherapy service that you have made with the therapist will include assessment, hands-on treatment, muscle activation interventions (hands-off treatment), post treatment review, and exercise prescription (time allocation to each of these will vary on a case-by-case scenario).

REMEDIAL MASSAGE

The duration of a remedial massage service that you have made with the therapist will include assessment, hands-on treatment, and post treatment review (time allocation to each of these will vary on a case-by-case scenario).

This will vary on a case by case basis.

Our therapist will provide you with a better idea of how many treatments it may take to resolve your main issues once we have done a thorough assessment with you.

However, most musculoskeletal conditions should be treatable after 2-3 treatments with the appropriate ongoing rehabilitation programming.

Timing between appointments will also vary as a case by case.

At the very least, pain and discomfort will see improvements.

If there are absolutely no improvements after 2 treatments, even while implementing the prescribed exercises and advice we have recommended; then we will advise seeking medical guidance from your GP or other health practitioners.

This usually means that the conditions you are presenting are most likely outside our scope of practice, or possibly more complex than just musculoskeletal (muscle based issue/injury).

In the scenario that you are seeking a myotherapy treatment for an acute or chronic condition, either from muscular injury or overuse, it is highly recommended that you try your best to stay consistent with our guidance of appropriate exercises and stretches prescribed.

This ensure long-term results, but also to give you the tools to look after yourselves.

On our end of things, we will do our best to provide you with exercises and stretching routines that best fit your work-life situation.

If you are just seeking a remedial massage treatment as a means of de-stressing or targeting an area that is “grumpy” or “sore”, either from sports and working-out, or a weekend moving furniture, then it isn’t mandatory to receive exercise or stretching advice. Unless you request some tips and guidance from our therapist, we will be more than happy to provide you with them.
